The countdown to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, taking place this summer in Australia and New Zealand, has begun, and adidas stepped up the hype this week with the release of new away kits for the six teams that will play during the tournament.
The jerseys were released on Thursday, March 23rd, and according to adidas press release, “Each Confederate sweater is inspired by nature, celebrating each country’s iconic landscape and the diversity of natural landscapes.”
“The Women’s World Cup is certainly the pinnacle of the sport, capturing the imagination of existing and new fans around the world. As with any major game, we know these designs will end up in the football history books,” said Sam Handy, Vice President. president of product and design at adidas football club. “With the games taking place in Australia and New Zealand, two countries with iconic landscapes, we wanted to create a common theme for our kits that celebrates and appreciates the wonders of the environment around the world.”
From Serrania de Hornocal in the north to Ushuaia in the south, Argentina’s away kit showcases the diversity of the country’s natural landscape.
The Colombian away jersey pays homage to the many hues of the Caño Cristales River, often referred to as the “river of five colors”, celebrating the unique changing phenomenon that occurs due to the reflection of light in the water. Using traditional federal colors reimagined through the prism of flowing water and reflective light, the design provides a fresh look that celebrates the country’s rich biodiversity.
Germany’s away kit is inspired by the country’s diverse dark green forests, from the Black Forest to the Sauberwald. Varying shades of green and hand-drawn graphics celebrate Germany’s vast forests, which are equivalent to one-third of the country’s land area.
The Japan national team’s away jersey features a pink hue inspired by the beautiful pink sunrise over Mount Fuji. The sunrise represents Japan’s collective mission – ahead of the Women’s World Cup – to add another star of champions to the coat of arms.
Spain’s away kit is inspired by the beautiful coral reefs that surround Spain’s vast coastline. This feature is typical for Spain and for the famous coral reefs of the countries hosting the tournament, Australia and New Zealand.
Sweden’s away kit was inspired by the vast glacial rivers and ice caps across the country. Combining the ever-changing blue graphics of the glaciers with accents and details of the country’s signature yellow, the design is meant to highlight the beauty and importance of the country’s glaciers.
Adidas will also supply kits for Costa Rica, Jamaica and Italy for the World Cup, with all nations releasing their World Cup kits by Thursday. Adidas also released a competition ball in January. Another Filipino team equipped with Adidas will release their jerseys “in the coming months”.
In addition to the World Cup teams, adidas on Thursday unveiled new away kits for some of the women’s national teams that will not be available in Australia and New Zealand this summer:
