At road.cc, every product is thoroughly tested, as long as it needs to be properly understood how it works. Our reviewers are seasoned cyclists and we trust them to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are supported by facts, comments are by nature an informed opinion and not a final ruling. We don’t intentionally try to break anything (except locks), but we try to find weaknesses in any design. The total score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects the functionality and value of the product – whose value is determined by how the product compares to products of similar specification, quality and price.
The Velocio Women’s Foundation Long-Sleeve Knit is the brand’s more affordable option, adding a touch of warmth to cool fall and spring rides. It’s sleek, loose and comfortable, and made entirely from recycled materials, so it’s a solid choice for those concerned with the brand’s eco-friendly approach and aesthetics. But be aware that your wrists will get chills when paired with short to medium cuff gloves.
This jersey is made in Albania from 100% recycled polyester.Eco-friendly material choices are used throughout the jersey, which is great because it has a soft inner face that’s comfortable on the skin. However, it is slightly on the large side.
Velocio opted for a slightly looser fit. There’s definitely plenty of breathing room, but it’s not overly loose anywhere – it has a consistent fit across the body and sleeve width, although the body is shorter than I’d like and can be expected from a relaxed option .
There was no tension or tightness anywhere while riding. It moves nicely with the body, through the power of the saddle, and the silicone strap on the rear hem helps prevent the jersey from shifting under the weight of the loading pockets.
The cuffs are pretty basic, though; they consist of just a 2cm-wide strap made of the same material as the rest of the jersey, and no silicone stuffed inside.I found that they didn’t stay in place, so my skin was bare when pairing it with the short sleeve gloves.
There’s also no wind protection, so riding down bare roads or downhill can be a chilly experience; the foundation isn’t rainproof either. While you can easily wear a base layer underneath for added warmth, it doesn’t work as well when pulling more layers on top due to the loose fit and rather bulky material. In conditions where I can ride comfortably in my usual wind/waterproof options, I feel a little limited.
Elsewhere, the collar is moderately high, close to the neck; here, too, wool is used for a snug fit, and zipper protection ensures no irritation. The zipper itself is thick, feels solid, and is quick and easy to use to adjust your temperature during the ride.
In terms of pockets, you have three in the rear with slightly sloped sides for easier access to nutrients while riding. There isn’t a single zippered pocket to protect valuables, though.
Each pocket is 12cm wide, and the middle 18.5cm deep pocket pretty much hides my large smartphone, so I use the side pockets that are slightly shorter at the outer edges (because of the slanted design) by 16.5cm to store nutrients and wind/rain coats.
Some reflective details have been added to the outer edges of both side pockets; each stripe is only half a centimeter wide and 6 centimeters long, which is a bit too discreet for me.
Velocio offers jerseys in a variety of sizes and comes in three elegant but neutral finishes – light olive, fiery red and night (navy) in testing – so the designs are unlikely to clash too much.
While it’s Velocio’s cheap jersey at £94, it’s still a bit pricey compared to other jerseys on the market.
If the latest version of the Altura Women’s Night Vision Long Sleeve is similar in performance to the one Emma is testing in 2020, it’s comparable to the Velocio, but much cheaper at just £60.
Tactic Sport’s Hard Day long-sleeve jersey costs £98, which is a little more expensive than Foundation’s, but its elastic cuffs are perfect for gloves, and the thinner fabric is great for stacking.
Overall, the Foundation is a quality, comfortable sweatshirt, but you’re sure to pay dearly for the elegant aesthetics and Velocio’s eco-friendly approach to recyclable materials. For a price tag approaching £100, zippered pockets for valuables, more efficient cuffs and larger reflective details would be practical and useful inclusions. That said, if you’re putting your money into a brand that cares about the planet, you’ll feel comfortable in this stylish sweatshirt, and if you’re wearing a base layer underneath, you’ll be ready for milder winter weather Keep warm.
Comfortable top for spring or fall riding, made from fully recycled fabrics but your wrists may get chilly

Velocio said: “Foundation long sleeves provide excellent value for cool weather performance. Foundation uses 100% recycled polyester, extending Velocio’s philosophy of improving the riding experience. Combining fine-gauge Italian-milled recycled polyester with a soft aesthetic Combined, a slightly relaxed fit and careful planning around finishes and details have created our most value-conscious option to date. Lightweight, incredibly soft and highly absorbent, the foundation meets Velocio quality and performance requirements.
A comfortable top for fall and spring riding, paired with a base layer that you can continue to wear in milder winter conditions. However, with short-to-medium cuff gloves, you will experience chills on your wrists.
How does the price compare to similar products on the market, including one recently tested on road.cc?
It’s quite expensive.Tactic Sport’s Hard Day long-sleeve jersey at £98 is slightly more expensive, but it has elastic cuffs that are perfect for pairing with gloves. You can definitely get a similar level of performance cheaper than the Foundation – for example, Altura’s Women’s Night Vision Long Sleeve is £60.
Very nice: It adds a touch of warmth to cool autumn and spring rides, and you can easily put a base layer underneath for milder winter weather. It looks good and is made from fully recycled materials, it’s a great option if you care about the brand’s eco-friendly approach. However, you run the risk of chilling your wrists when wearing gloves, and the loose fit combined with the slightly bulky fabric can cause you to feel limited after wearing the usual wind/water repellent layers. It’s also a bit pricey.
I regularly do the following types of riding: road racing, off-road biking, commuting, touring, club riding, sports, general fitness riding, gravel riding, indoor turbo and roller, track

Stylish, well made, great as a mid layer but limited as an outer layer – albeit at a very high price
Excellent quality and storage capacity, but pays dearly for cold weapons and limited performance window
